How Are Blizzards Severe? If you live in the northern part of the U.S.A, they’re severe. Why? One reason is that these storms have winds at least 35 mph. That’s almost the speed of a zebra, (They run 40mph.) (Some can be faster than that speed!). Like hurricanes and tornadoes, blizzards can cause damage and affect the weather. Since snow is being blown, it’s hard to see (term: Blinding snow) which is called a whiteout. Blizzards can also affect people! Cold air and powerful winds make wind-chill. When the wind-chill is low and you’re outside too long, you could get frost bite. This can harm your skin. Safety Tips Be prepared when a blizzard hits. Here are some safety tips: DO NOT leave the house during a blizzard (only if important). If you MUST leave the house you need to wear thick layers (warm clothing). You would be freezing if you didn’t! If you’re traveling during a blizzard always have first aid kits. During a blizzard, eat food regularly because it helps keep the body warm. After a blizzard don’t use any transportation until the weather is better. For example: One lady was driving during a blizzard and she was snowed in! If you follow these tips you and your family could possibly be fine, so don’t worry!
